Vitamin C – also known as ascorbic acid helps to protect many different cells and keep them healthy, it also helps to maintain healthy skin, blood vessels and bones. Helps to absorb iron and assists the body with wound healing.
Adults ages between 19- 64 years need around 40mg of Vitamin C and you should be able to get all the Vitamin C you need from your daily diet. However, Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body so must come from the diet on a daily basis.
If you have a deficiency in Vitamin C it can actually lead to scurvy. Unlike many other vitamins, you can eat too much Vitamin C and symptoms of toxicity are possible if you consume over 1000mg a day you can start to experience stomach pains, diarrhoea and flatulence. If you stop taking the supplements the symptoms should subside quite quickly.
Vitamin C is found in a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, including red peppers, orange, broccoli, cantaloupe, strawberries, potatoes.
